History of AP Branch

The Andhra Pradesh Branch of Air Force Association was started in December 1980, as one of the first few branches, soon after the formation of AFA at New Delhi . Air Vice Marshal SA Hussain AVSM (Retd) was the first president of AP Branch, with Air Cmde RP Sinha (Retd), Wg Cdr SK Gorowala (Retd) and Wg Cdr TC George, VSM (Retd) as Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer respectively.

The first General Body Meeting was held on 06 Sep 81 with 29 members in attendance. Initially, office of the branch functioned from the residence of Secretary. The premises of Air Force Officers’ Cooperative Housing Society Ltd, Vayupuri and Trimulgherry Officers’ Mess of Air Force Station Begumpet were used to conduct General Body Meetings and Social get to-gethers of members and families. After Air Marshal IW Sabhaney, PVSM AVSM (Retd) took over Aa President of the branch and later Wg Cdr TJ Reddy, VSM (Retd) as Secretary of the branch in Aug 1985, Building No. J-97 Roberts Road, Trimulgherry (now occupied by ECHS Regional Centre, Secunderabad), was allotted by Air Force Station, Begumpet on the intervention of Air HQ and HQ Training Command. The office of the branch started functioning from this location from 01 Nov 1985. The resources were scarce and most of the work had to be done by the President and Secretary. Secretary, Wg Cdr TJ Reddy, though employed full time (till Oct 2003) in corporate sector at a senior level, was of great help to meet secretarial needs of the branch besides providing and assisting in re-employment of a number of members. Later, when this accommodation was needed for use as a VIP Guest house, present accommodation  in the living-in area of Air Force Station, Begumpet (besides Syndicate Bank on Bowenpally – Balanagar road).was handed over to the branch . The accommodation was inaugurated on 13 May 1988 by  Air Mshl JS Rai, AVSM VM, the then AOC-in-C HQ TC, IAF.Gp Capt G Chaturvedi was  then the Stn Cdr. Coincidentally, clerical assistance was made available on full time basis  from this time onwards. The building is adequately spacious accommodating offices of President/Vice President Secretary and Office Clerk/Assistant, visitors room, a meeting hall that can accommodate about 40 persons, two spacious rest rooms separately for men and women, with a verandah for the entire length of the billet. The building has  a fencing on all sides. The hall is used as information room where all publications, magazines, policy letters and other literature useful to members and families are kept and made available for reference, besides its use for mini get togethers and Interaction meetings with wives and spouse members. There is sufficient space outside the building for holding GBMs (on third Sunday in Sep) and Social get togethers with members and families (first Sunday in Dec every year) and tambola get-togethers on first Sunday of every month. The accomodation was partly renovated in Nov 2009 with the initiative of Gp Capt  (now Air cmde ) C Rajeev, the then Stn Cdr AF Begumpet.

The branch holds a Dinner get-together for officer members and families on 01 Apr or during the first week of April in the Officers’ Mess of College of Air Warfare with local AF Cdrs and wives as guests. The branch has been periodically conducting 'Awareness Programmes', which are essentially inter-active sessions, for the families and widows of air veterans to familiarise them with various benefits , concessions and 'Actions to be taken by air veterans when still in good health and sound mind'. The branch has been occasionally conducting programmes with the help and involvement of Zila Sainik Welfare Ofices of Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy Districts for spot registration of ESM and widows and issue of ESM/Widow identity cards.

The office has a PC with a printer and scanner purchased out of grant from HQ TC ,and office / computer furniture loaned by No. 404 Air Force Stn, Begumpet and Air Force Academy. A chapter of the branch was opened on 12 April 2006 in the premises of the Air Force Station, Hakimpet. A sub-branch has been opened in August 2011 at Tirupati which is actively functioning. The first full fledged meeting of members of  this Sub-Branch and their wives were addressed by Wg Cdr TJ Reddy, Vice President of the AP Branch on 18 Dec 2011 which was very well attended. HQ TC , IAF and Air Force Station Begumpet have been extremely helpful in providing need based assistance to the branch for the conduct of various functions.  Air Chief Marshal IH Latif , PVSM (Retd) and Padmasri Mrs Bilkees Latif who rarely miss any activity of the branch have been a source of strength to the branch. During early years President Air Mshl IW Sabhaney (now late),  Vice President Dr.N Bhagwandas, IAS (Retd) - ex -Sqn Ldr and Retired Chief Secretary of AP State-  and later AVM MK Rudra (Retd) and AVM ES Lala,VSM (Retd) as Presidents were associated with  growth in the activities of the branch. During all this period, from 1985 onwards , Wg Cdr TJ Reddy VSM (Retd), Secretary and currently Vice President , has been a source of great strength in continuously improving the functioning of the branch and expanding its activities . The members whose names deserve special mention for  their contribution towards the development of the branch are Late Air Cmde PC Ramachandran,AFC(Retd), Late Air Cmde KS Rao AVSM (Retd) , late Wg Cdr TC George VSM (Retd) , Wg Cdr HN Koul (Retd ) treasurer for a long time and now settled in Goa, Ex- WO(now late) MSP Rao, Ex-Sgt SA Sattar, Ex-Sgt PS Murthy, EX-Cpl D Subbarayudu and Ex-Cpl K Venkat Kishen. Members of Governing council from time to time have all along  extended their unstinted cooperation for successful running  of the branch and conduct of its various activities. AVM P Prakash Rao (Retd) is the current president of the branch since Jul 2009 with Wg Cdr TJ Reddy as Vice President.

The branch had brought out, for the first time in September 1993, a handbook titled 'A  SUMMARY OF ENTITLEMENTS , BENEFITS AND CONCESSIONS AVAILABLE TO EX-AIR FORCE PERSONNEL,THEIR FAMILIES/ DEPENDENTS'. Thereafter information updates have beeen issued every year to members in the form of a hand out  at GBMs/Annual Social get-togethers. With many changes that have taken place, a printed and near comprehensive  and a very useful 'INFORMATION HANDBOOK SEP 2010' and 'INFORMATION UPDATE SEP 2011' have been brought out,  with the initiative and efforts of Wg Cdr TJ Reddy, VSM (Retd) , Vice  President  of the branch. A copy of these near comprehensively informative handbooks have been made available to AFA HO , Air HQ, AFRO, all AFA branches, all Zilla Sainik Welfare Offices in AP and on request a number of air veterans across the country.
